Shakespeare Birthplace Trust – 2014

Outdoor Events

In the summer of 2014 Anthony Head was commissioned to create the Christmas period projection for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon. Devising the theme of Text and Texture, the work explored Elizabethan and Jacobean patterns, drawings and fabrics alongside the works of Shakespeare.

The show featured actors reciting lines from Shakespeare’s plays related to four themes: Love, Winter, Imagination, Nature. The themes were chosen following software that Anthony had written that analysed all of the words in the plays to establish theme words that were used in many plays. A second piece of software then extracted every line from every play that included the theme word. From this a large selection was made and displayed at random on Shakespeare Birthplace, along with period music and textures from the era. The result, Text and Texture was four 5 minute performances shown every half and hour for over two weeks. Each performance was never exactly the same due the different selections of words that were seen. Approximately 40,000 people came to see the shows over the fortnight, which started with the Christmas light switch on, with actor Christopher Biggins doing the launch.
